Mission Statement
The mission of the NCLH laboratory is to advance the understanding and application of behavioral principles to address the complex challenges of substance abuse, unemployment, and poverty. Through rigorous, collaborative research, we aim to develop and evaluate interventions to reduce these societal problems and train the next generation of researchers and practitioners by equipping students with the skills to tackle these complex issues. Recent focus has included substances such as opioids, cocaine, and alcohol.
Funding
This research is funded by an R01 grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
Ongoing Projects (last updated October, 2025)
Current IRB protocols: (1) Contingency Management to Enhance Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder and (2) Long-Term Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder
How can students get involved?
Masters Students
The NCLH supports funded Graduate Research Assistant positions for students enrolled in Northern Michigan University's MS in Psychology program. Graduate Research Assistants in the NCLH work with Dr. Forrest Toegel (Psychological Science) and his research team at NMU and collaborating institutions on grant-funded projects. Current projects evaluate reinforcement-based procedures to combat drug addiction and promote healthy behavior among adults living with interrelated problems of substance use disorders, unemployment, and poverty. Graduate Research Assistants attend regular meetings with the research team at Northern Michigan University and collaborating institutions, and assist monitoring project progress, analyzing data, and preparing presentations, papers, and talks based on the obtained results.
Undergraduate Students
The NCLH supports funded and unfunded Undergraduate Research Assistant positions for Psychology majors enrolled in Northern Michigan University Department of Psychological Science. Undergraduate researchers in the NCLH work with Dr. Forrest Toegel (Psychological Science), attend regular meetings with the research team at Northern Michigan University, and assist with tasks that support ongoing research projects. Experienced undergraduate student researchers may be granted additional opportunities to contribute to analyzing data or preparing presentations, papers, and talks based on results from work conducted in the NCLH.
